Cross: Official trailer

*Warning - This article contains major spoilers for Cross season 1.*

Cross, featuring Aldis Hodge in the latest portrayal of James Patterson's much-loved character, premiered on Amazon Prime today.

The gripping series, created by Ben Watkins, follows a detective and forensic psychologist and is already being devoured by bookworms and crime fiction aficionados alike.

The plot centres around Detective Alex Cross as he races against time to apprehend a dangerous serial killer before his gruesome plans come to fruition.

Simultaneously, he grapples with personal struggles, juggling fatherhood to two children while coping with the devastating loss of his wife, whose murderer remains at large, reports the Mirror.

With the release of the exhilarating eight-part series, which also features Isaiah Mustafa, Ryan Eggold and Alona Tal, we delve into the most pressing questions left unanswered after season 1.

It bodes well for the series that Amazon Prime were so confident in its success, they already renewed it for a second season earlier this year.

That means new fans of the detective show won’t have to fear the threat of cancellation, which is a fate that has befallen other popular series after just one season.

According to Variety , casting has already started for season 2, with Jeanine Mason reportedly joining the lineup after her success in shows like Roswell, New Mexico, NCIS: Los Angeles and Grey's Anatomy.

We don't know if Ed Ramsey will return (Image: AMAZON PRIME) Was Alex Cross’ decision to erase Ed Ramsey’s crimes a bad idea?

When Alex finally catches serial killer Ed Ramsey (Ryan Eggold) attempting to murder Shannon Whitmer (Eloise Mumford) in hospital after his previous plans were foiled.

A grinning Alex tells the killer that they have destroyed his book detailing each of his murders, as all Ed has ever wanted is to join the serial killer hall of fame.

Instead of rewarding him with this title, Alex decides Ed should only be tried for what he did to his final victim.

He tells Ed that he will be telling be telling everyone that his partner in crime Bobby Trey (Johnny Ray Gill), who brought Ed his victims and carried out his dirty work, is the real ‘Fanboy’ killer.

While this moment was a satisfying watch, as Ed is driven mad by the fact that no one will know the truth about his killing spree, it could be a mistake on Alex’s part.

Ed is a powerful man, and trying him for fewer crimes could mean that he comes out of prison sooner than expected.

What does Kayla Craig’s deal with Bobby Trey mean for season 2?

Right at the end of the season finale, we see Kayla (Alona Tal) and Bobby sit down together for a very interesting conversation.

Throughout the series, Kayla is crucial to helping Alex track down both Ed and his wife’s killer, but now her character appears to be going in a different direction.

Kayla explains to Bobby that Cross will label him the ‘Fanboy’ killer in Ed’s place after he helps them track down evidence to appease the family members of his various victims.

In return, he will get full immunity after 24 months, despite being responsible for two murders.

However, she also makes her own deal with Bobby, who agrees to pass on the “dirt” Ramsay had on various important people in exchange for cash.

Does this mean Kayla could be up to no good in season 2? Only time will tell.

At the end of season 1, we learn that Alex’s charges have been completely dropped after he violently beat up a man he mistook for his wife’s killer.

Chief Anderson (Jennifer Wigmore) admits to Alex that giving him a “do-over” will help her in the new race to become Mayor.

When Alex tells her that “isn’t the world I want to live in”, she points out that he must accept this is the world they do live in, saying: “Otherwise, how are you ever going to change things?”

“You’re a hero, Alex,” she tells him. “But only you get to decide what that means.”

So, moving into season it seems the Chief might be even more politically motivated than she was in season 1, which could spell serious trouble for a police department that has already sparked anger from the public.

Cross is available to stream now on Amazon Prime.
