Outlander's Caitriona Balfe teases thrilling cliffhanger in 'powerful' season 7 finale

Outlander: Season seven part two teased in trailer

Caitriona Balfe, the renowned Outlander star who portrays Claire Fraser, has sparked fan excitement by hinting at a mind-blowing cliffhanger to conclude the second half of season 7.

The seasoned actress, with more than ten years of adventuring through time on the Starz hit with Jamie Fraser star Sam Heughan, shared insights into the upcoming episodes set to air later this month.

Her remarks follow poignant social media posts reflecting on the final days of production as they concluded filming for the show's eighth and ultimate season earlier this year.

Both leads have left an indelible mark across over 100 episodes, with fans eagerly anticipating the release of the last instalments projected for late 2025.

Audiences are abuzz with anticipation over the unfolding of season 7's latter part, with Balfe letting slip details about the duo's anticipated return to 1778 Scotland.

In an interview with TV Insider, she disclosed that there's an unforeseen cliffhanger that will undoubtedly catch viewers off guard.

Describing the shooting of a scene in a church, Balfe reminisced: "The last scene...occasionally you get scenes where you get goosebumps. Even [talking about it] now, it's really powerful."

She continued to share her vivid memories of filming, saying: "There are certain things that when you filmed them, they are in your mind. That feeling never leaves you."

Delving into the emotions felt during the climactic finale, she added: "So, when we went to film [the ending], I got this bolt of a memory. It all feels very like, 'Ooh, spooky.' [Claire thinks] how can it be? How's it possible?"

She then expressed her uncertainty about the show's final chapter, admitting: "[Season 8] is probably the season I've known the least about going into it. I have no idea how the season ends."

She disclosed that preparation time was unusually short this time around, saying: "We only got the scripts for Episodes 1 and 2 about two months before we started.

"We would usually have more [time]. I don't think [the producers] trust any of us, to be honest," followed by a chuckle at the thought.

Balfe also shared her own anticipation for the upcoming season, adding: "I think they're trying to keep things very, very close to their chest. We are as excited and nervous and curious to see what's going to happen as everybody else."

At a recent event at the Paley Center for Media, Outlander's Executive Producer Maril Davis gave fans a hint of what to expect, teasing: "I mean this is such a rollercoaster. [Season] 7b is such a rollercoaster. I always say this every season - I feel like I say, 'Buckle your seatbelts.'

"But this one in particular is an emotional rollercoaster, so I think people should prepare to be, kind of... wrung out."

The acclaimed series, adapted from Diana Gabaldon's bestselling novels, is set to conclude its television journey in 2025, bringing an end to the epic tale.

Following the closure of Lionsgate+ in the UK, new episodes of Outlander will be available on Starz and to stream on Prime Video channel MGM+ from Sunday, November 22. You must be an Amazon Prime member before you can sign up for MGM+.
