Mrs Brown's Boys didn't make it into the top 10 most viewed TV shows on the BBC, as Gavin and Stacey took the lead in holiday viewership.

The first Christmas special of Brendan O'Carroll and his team, titled Ding Dong Mammy, was broadcast at 11.05pm on Christmas Day.

On Boxing Day, the BBC unveiled its list of the top 10 most watched programmes on Christmas Day, and Mrs Brown's Boys was noticeably absent.

However, it is expected to have been the most-watched programme on RTE on Christmas Day, although the official ratings will not be released until the New Year.

Mrs Brown's Boys will be back for their New Year's Special - BandB Mammy which is scheduled to air at 10.30pm, reports the Irish Mirror.

After her Christmas Day antics, Mrs Brown is set to embark on a new venture by converting her spare room into a BandB. However, things take a turn when a dangerous fugitive arrives and takes over!

"Mrs Brown as a landlady doesn't work out," Brendan hinted.

"Agnes is taken hostage, along with anyone who visits the house - including her family, the neighbours and a brass band! This is certainly a situation you wouldn't see on Four in a Bed.

Steve Speirs (The Tuckers) also makes a guest appearance. "The New Year's Eve storyline is probably the funniest I've written in a long, long time," Brendan revealed.

Meanwhile, the final episode of Gavin and Stacey achieved the highest Christmas Day ratings since 2008, according to the BBC.

The finale of the beloved sitcom, which featured the long-awaited union of Smithy and Nessa, captured the hearts of 12.3 million viewers, according to initial ratings.

This surpassed the 2019 Christmas special, which drew 11.6 million viewers, by over 700,000.

The show also topped the BBC's Christmas Day lineup, with the new Wallace and Gromit film, Vengeance Most Fowl, coming in second with 9.4 million viewers, and the King's speech attracting 5 million.

The BBC dominated Christmas Day viewing, with BBC One achieving its largest share since 2007. BBC One outperformed all streaming services combined, nearly doubling their overall audience and also leading among 16- to 34 year olds.

BBC One's audience was three times that of Netflix and YouTube individually, and more than double for 16- to 34 year olds.

The BBC accounted for over half of the viewing market for 16- to 34 year olds, with BBC iPlayer alone surpassing Netflix in overall and 16- to 34 year old viewership.

Charlotte Moore, BBC's Chief Content Officer, commented: "Christmas Day on the BBC brought people together in their millions and saw Gavin and Stacey triumph.

"Ruth Jones and James Corden created a magical finale that fans will treasure forever. Their exquisitely written comedy creation is a show all about family, love and joy and it proved to be the unmissable TV event of the year. I'm very proud that the line-up across the day was a showcase for the very best in British storytelling, and caps off an exceptional 2024 for the BBC with increased market share against the competition both local and global."
