Bargain Hunt star Colin Young opens up on 'downside' to daughter's career
Bargain Hunt is back on BBC One with expert Colin Young offering his invaluable advice. The antiques fanatic admitted he did not choose a career in the auctioneering industry, as such.
He said: "Simply the first job I saw in the newspaper was for ‘manager’s assistant’ at The Bourne Auction Rooms. Aged 18, I did not even know what an auction or an antique was; all I knew was that the place looked interesting enough to warrant cutting off my 9-inch orange mohawk for an interview."
He joked this move was a huge regret of his, adding: "My only professional regret I have is that I had the haircut and had pretended to conform." His daughter, Kirsty, has followed in his footsteps and is a qualified auctioneer.
When asked how he spent his free time, he explained: "Fortunately, at work there is never any free time as there is always something exciting to do next. My daughter Kirsty caught the saleroom bug and is now a director and qualified auctioneer in the firm."
He joked about the potential downsides, adding: "I find the only downside is people telling me she’s the better auctioneer." The expert admitted 'free time' is not something he enjoys, as he gets bored easily.

"I just cannot stay still for any longer. If I come home to an empty house I’ll put on an album at full blast and live the moment.

"The albums are usually punk music, but I have mellowed into a lot of metal over the years. I am still gigging when I can and if the diary permits following Leeds United."

If he had not entered the world of antiques, Colin rather fancies himself as a politician.
He quipped: "I think I would make the perfect cabinet member for any government and become Minister for Stating the Obvious... a specialist portfolio established to allow someone to say what everyone thinks."
Always the joker, he said the only thing he collects now is "bad debts", adding: "Collecting really doesn’t interest me at all. I see great things in the day job without ever having to spend a penny."
