A caller on Jeremy Vine’s Channel 5 show shared his fears about the Labour government’s treatment of pensioners, feeling he had been “kicked in the teeth” by Keir Starmer.

Richard, from Essex, said on Monday: “I voted for Starmer in the last general election and he has kicked me in the teeth.

“He said that 4,000 of us pensioners would die under the Conservative Party, and he is no different. The only difference is, if we get a hard winter, it will be 20,000 of these pensioners who die and he will save 20,000 people’s pensions that he won’t have to pay out.

“For me, he has destroyed my faith in voting for any political party whatsoever.”

Richard explained that he is not entitled to pension credit and owns a two-bedroom middle-terraced house.

He continued: “I’m not a millionaire or anything like that. I worked until I was 65 and now, all he’s trying to do, he wants to kill me off as quick as possible.”

Journalist Jemma Forte chimed in that “there is help available” and suggested that Richard seek advice from Help the Aged or take in a lodger.

Richard quickly retorted: “You’re talking like an idiot! If I have a lodger, I’ve got to take money off him then I’m further into debt because my electricity and everything else will be more to pay. I have a two-bedroom middle-terraced house for me and my wife and I’ve got to take in a lodger in my other room?”

Jemma replied: “It’s not ideal, it’s very hard times for so many people.”

The conversation struck a chord with many on social media. One user commented: “A lodger is that the best answer she could come up with... An elderly couple bringing a stranger into their home... they should not have to do that ffs.”

A second echoed: “Gosh there’s the answer ‘we take in lodgers’ I mean of all the stupid things to say what an insult.”

Another said: “There is nothing wrong with democracy since he got what he votes for. The problem is that politicians can lie to get in power and then change their plans to voters (which they knew they would do all along).

“Perhaps democracy should involve a vote and then every politician gets a probation period of 1 year with a devote - that would be more likely to keep them honest.”

While a fourth argued: “These callers are a joke who expect everything to change overnight by the flick of a switch! Get real! You put up with 14 years of rot now you can’t cope! Vote conservative and see what they will do for you!”

Labour has warned of "tough choices" to come in the budget and sparked fears of further cuts after it cut back winter fuel payments to pensioners.

There has been speculation as to which taxes could be raised in the Budget after Labour committed not to increase national insurance, income tax or VAT.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves said a spending review is necessary to plug a £22 billion "black hole" in the public finances left by the Conservative government.

Jeremy Vine airs on Channel 5 weekdays from 9.15am.
