Lee Carsley will not be ruled out of the running for the England job despite the disappointing 2-1 defeat to Greece at Wembley, which has made Sunday's clash with Finland all the more important.

Carsley's attempt to incorporate Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Cole Palmer into the same line-up proved unsuccessful, leading to a humiliating night for England.

Despite this setback, the Football Association (FA) remains committed to its current managerial strategy.

At 50, Carsley continues to have the backing of the FA's top brass to guide England through their Nations League fixtures, and he remains in contention for the permanent role. However, the FA are also exploring other options.

After the final Nations League match in November, FA chief executive Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott will hold discussions to decide what to do, report the Mirror.

The pair will need to decide whether to retain Carsley for the World Cup qualifiers or consider alternatives such as Eddie Howe or Graham Potter. High-profile names like Pep Guardiola could become viable candidates for the 2028 Euros.

England still hold the belief that they can top their Nations League group and secure a prime position for World Cup qualifying, as long as they come out victorious against Finland.

Admiting to a tactical misstep, Carsley has vowed to revert to a more conservative approach against Finland after taking risks that didn't pay off versus the Greeks.

Carsley reflected: "Probably won't try that again on Sunday, I have coached enough to know we need to do something different. Had Harry been fit I might have gone down another route.

"We are going to assess Harry, he is training on Friday with us. He has scored a lot of goals. I've done three games and he has scored two goals so he is a massive part of what we do.

"Of course, I was confident going into the game and I am frustrated and disappointed it's not worked but it is on to the next game."

Carsley insists that he has never considered his role guaranteed and continues to focus on the present without getting ahead of himself.

"I have definitely not felt that, I have tried to be as clear as I can in terms of what I am here to do," he explained.

"I have done this interim role three places and tried to be up front as I can. I am really privileged and feel really trusted that I am in this position and nothing changes."
