BBC The Traitors first celebrity 'confirmed' as huge star 'lets slip' live on air

Stephen Fry has dropped a huge hint that he will appear on The Traitors.

While on Zoe Ball's Radio 2 Breakfast Show, the 67-year-old actor and author kept a tight lip on whether he’ll take part in the hit murder-mystery game show, despite being among the familiar names in the rumoured line-up.

When Zoe pressed him on the subject, Fry responded that he’s “not allowed to comment.” During a discussion about the upcoming celebrity edition with Jessie Ware, Zoe asked, “Anyone else in the studio going on Celebrity Traitors?”

Fry joked: “I've heard rumours that I'm in it… but I’m not allowed to comment.”

An excited Zoe responded: “That’s promising, isn’t it? That is promising!”

In August, reports surfaced that the Blackadder star eagerly seized the chance to appear in the upcoming series after becoming a devoted fan of the BBC show.

According to a source, host Claudia Winkleman had made sure Stephen was at the very top of the celebrity line-up.

They told The Sun: “Claudia put Stephen right at the top of celebs she’d want on The Traitors and Stephen has made it clear he’d be game.

“Stephen is a fan of the show and Claudia was desperate for him to be in it. No contracts have been signed yet but he told the show’s bosses to name a time and date and he’ll be there." Other rumoured stars include other super fans Ricky Gervais, Kathy Burke and Jonathan Ross.

It comes after the BBC announced it had commissioned the show for a fourth series, in its original format, and said the third series has finished filming in the Scottish Highlands.

Series two of the show, which aired in January 2024, saw British Army engineer Harry Clark take home the whole £95,150 prize pot after he deceived disability model Mollie Pearce into thinking he was a fellow Faithful when he was really a Traitor.

With it being a hit with viewers, the intense finale peaked at 6.9million viewers, with an average of 5.5m.

The series has earned a raft of awards including the Bafta TV Award for Best Reality and Constructed Factual in 2023 and a National Television Award for Best Reality Competition, also in 2023.

The show also took home a National Television Award last month. The US has already had two celebrity versions of the show, both proving to be a big hit.
