Helen Skelton's heartfelt encounter with James Herriot's son on Yorkshire Great and Small

The heartwarming series Yorkshire Great and Small with Dan and Helen is set to move viewers to tears as Jim Wight, the son of the much-loved author James Herriot, makes a touching appearance.

The popular programme, which sees Helen Skelton and Dan Walker exploring the rich history of Yorkshire, has won over audiences with its delve into the county's fascinating heritage.

In tonight's episode, viewers watched as Helen followed in the footsteps of the celebrated vet and writer James Herriot.

James Herriot, who devoted 50 years to his work as a vet, was also a prolific author whose life and writing inspired the treasured TV series All Creatures Great and Small.

First adapted into a film in 1975, the story later became a cherished BBC series and was revived by Channel 5 in 2020 to the delight of fans.

In a candid conversation about the lasting impact of his father's work, Helen said to Jim: "Your dad, his work has gone on and on and been reincarnated hasn't it."

Jim replied with enthusiasm: "Oh yes. One of the greatest legacies he had was that people wrote to him," reports the Mirror.

He went on to share the profound effect his father's writing had on readers: "Having read his books, they said it made them feel better. People on hard times, people depressed, people still send letters to my sister and I almost 30 years after his death to say reading his books are therapeutic."

James Herriot's children have shown nothing but support for the Channel 5 series that pays tribute to their father's work.

His son Jim has been quoted as saying: "I hope and believe this could be a breath of fresh air to the population at the moment. Would my father have approved of it? Oh, I think so."

In addition, James' daughter Rosie has also voiced her support for the Channel 5 adaptation of All Creatures Great and Small, which brings her father's stories to life for a new generation.

She remarked: "We feel that there is a very big generation gap between those brought up with Herriot and those who have never heard of him and we think there is a whole new generation who has never read those wonderful books."
