James left Helen heartbroken in Thursday's episode of All Creatures Great and Small with a poignant confession.

Fans adore the pairing of James and Helen, yet this evening saw James preoccupied with Rose, a cow belonging to Mr Crabtree that was off its food, as he endeavoured to diagnose her ailment.

In the show, he encountered the postman - who not only checked on James' wellbeing - but also referenced his past health issues. Audiences will remember that James was deemed unfit for military service due to brucellosis, likely contracted from Crabtree's cattle.

The postman remarked: "Still thanking your lucky stars, I'll bet," to which James responded: "I'm grand, thank you."

Crabtree concurred with the postman, suggesting: "I reckon things turned out for the best, don't you? ".

These words later haunted James, prompting him to confess to Helen that both men considered him "lucky to have got brucellosis". She answered: "Well, you were, I suppose. Very! That one visit to the herd could have changed everything."

Despite Helen's attempts at comfort, saying: "Well, you were sent home before you finished your training. That's fortunate in anyone's book," but James didn't know what to say.

James couldn't shake off his unease, insisting that training carried its own perils.

He suddenly revealed the trauma of his wartime experience, saying: "It certainly felt that way when my crew were shot down," leaving Helen shocked as she was unaware of this fact. Surprised, she responded to him: "You never said," prompting James to open up further: "I didn't want to frighten you in case I flew again."
