Manchester United hero Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly rejected the chance to enter into talks to become the new Denmark manager. The 51-year-old is said to already be in negotiations over the role of head coach at a ‘big club’ after being axed as Red Devils manager in November 2021.

United are currently in turmoil on the pitch, having won just three of their 10 matches in all competitions this season.

And Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag is clinging to his job, with club chiefs deciding to stick with him for the time being following a board meeting in London earlier this week.

Solskjaer was appointed United boss in March 2019 after impressing during a three-month spell as caretaker manager.

He led the 13-time Premier League champions to a second-place top-flight finish during the 2020/21 campaign but was given his marching orders following a 4-1 thumping at the hands of Watford just under three years ago.

Solskjaer, who bagged 126 goals in 366 appearances for United during his playing days, is yet to return to management following his Old Trafford departure, but has been working as a match analyst for UEFA since the start of last year. However, his employment situation could be about to change.

According to Danish sports magazine Tipsbladet, the Danish Football Association have reached out to Solskjaer about replacing Kasper Hjulmand, who stepped down as Denmark’s national team manager in the summer after leading his country to the last-16 of Euro 2024.

But Solskjaer has declined further talks with the organisation. The former striker is said to be locked in discussions with a ‘big club’ about a head coaching role and opted against taking up the offer of a job interview with Denmark’s director of football Peter Moller.

United announced Solskjaer’s exit the morning after their defeat to Watford as the 1999 Champions League winner undertook an emotional farewell interview with the club’s television channel.

And the Norwegian explained at the time: “You know what this club means to me and what I wanted to achieve here. For the club, for the fans, for the players, for the staff. I wanted us to take the next step to challenge for the league, to win trophies.”

Solskjaer was asked about the prospect of returning to Old Trafford during a Q&A at the Oslo Business Forum at the end of last month.

And the Red Devils icon admitted: “If the [United] family asks, I would say yes every day of the week. It feels wrong to talk about jobs that other people have now - but I would say yes, of course.”
