Lee Carsley's hopes of getting England job take a hit with dire Greece defeat

Lee Carsley's prospects of permanently replacing Gareth Southgate as England manager took a significant hit as Greece celebrated a historic 2-1 Nations League victory in honour of George Baldock.

Carsley began his temporary tenure with encouraging wins over the Republic of Ireland and Finland, but his daring, offensive line-up faltered under the iconic Wembley arch.

The ex-midfielder fielded five forwards but lacked a dedicated striker in the absence of the injured Harry Kane, allowing the visitors to exploit a disjointed performance.

The final whistle was met with jeers after Vangelis Pavlidis netted a last-minute winner his second goal of the evening just after Jude Bellingham seemed to have spared their embarrassment.

Greece's inaugural triumph over England came on their tenth attempt and was particularly noteworthy given the tragic events leading up to Thursday's Group B2 match.

The passing of Buckingham-born Greek international Baldock at just 31 was announced on the eve of the clash, prompting a moment of silence at Wembley in memory of the former Sheffield United defender.

After scoring the opening goal against Carsley's worryingly disjointed team, Pavlidis gestured towards the black armband worn by all players. Their focus on attacking left them vulnerable in defence.

Despite having three goals disallowed for offside, Greece managed to put pressure on an England side that found it difficult to create significant opportunities.

The night concluded with Bellingham netting an equaliser, only for Pavlidis to secure a late and memorable victory with his decisive strike.
