An Exclusive Look into 'Dark Matter: Nightmare Before Midnight' at Mercer Labs

Mercer Labs is days away from opening the doors to their new haunting exhibition. The brainchild of co-founder and multidisciplinary artist Roy Nachum, Dark Matter: Nightmare Before Midnight faces fantasy and fear in an embark into the unknown. Staged at their 36,000 square foot space in lower Manhattan, the exhibition features 15 unique rooms, each an entrancing world of its own. Ahead of opening, Nachum gave HypeArt an exclusive look into the depths and darkness of his latest exhibition.

By day, Mercer Labs will continue presentations of their inaugural exhibition Limitless. After the sun sets, however, the museum will explore a darker side. Across 4D soundscapes, infinity rooms, 360-degree projections and large-scale oil paintings, the show probes the presence of darkness in art, culture and the everyday human psyche in an embrace of the paranormal.

Dark Matter is a sensorial spin on the classic haunted house. The main hall bends into a sea of horror icons and grotesque AI creations, from a fiery headless horseman to a merciless clash of angels. The experience is akin to a cinematic scene, filled with rich graphics and a symphony that plays from above. As the exhibition deepens, visitors will find themselves immersed in waves of blood splashing across the walls, a screeching song by Nachum's signature crown kids, and the magnetic affection of a lonesome robot arm.

The charm of Dark Matter finds home between the tangible and abstract. Evoking the whimsy and play of one’s inner child, the exhibition takes the likes of a digital playground in its use of crayon-powered interactive displays and 3D drawing boards. While the idea for Dark Matter finds inspiration from Nachum’s subconscious, the artist envisions a space where people can come together and realize their dreams (and nightmares.)

Since its opening earlier this year, Mercer Labs has already played host to a number of big names in music, fashion, and art. Expanding the museum’s mission to push the envelope of immersive art, this latest exhibition mines beauty in the age-old question: are you afraid of the dark?

Tickets are available for select evenings from October 4 through October 30, 2024. Head to Mercer Labs’ website for more information.
