The One Show halted as Russell Watson breaks down in tears over heartfelt message

Russell Watson in tears after message from consultant

The One Show was put on pause for a moment on Monday to let a tearful Russell Watson collect his emotions.

The acclaimed opera singer spoke to Alex Jones and Roman Kemp on the BBC series about his return to music after two terrifying experiences with brain tumours.

He began his interview by joining Hollywood star Will Ferrell recounting his iconic singing in the comedy movie Step Brothers.

Russell then opened up about how his tumours had had a devastating effect on his career.

After 25 rounds of radiotherapy in 2008, he says “the impact is still there” and candidly shared how he went through a depressive episode during his recovery.

Alex and Roman then surprised him with a touching message from his consultant, Mr Lackett, which left him in floods of tears.

“17 years on from that brave decision to have the surgery, and look what a glittering career you’ve had in between,” the medical professional told Russell.

“And I can’t tell you how much the team and I were so proud to watch you and your progress after that awful night when you were taken into hospital as an emergency.

“We’re thrilled for you. Well done, Russell.”

Roman quickly offered him a box of tissues when the video had finished, pausing the show while Russell regained his composure, gently scolding the presenters, “Why did you do that?”

Alex let out an “Aww” while Russell wiped away tears from his eyes.

“What a man,” he said after collecting himself. “And so lovely as well. So down to earth.

“Just a beautiful human being,” Russell continued, still visibly choking up. “I will be eternally grateful to him.”

His health journey and musical comeback has now formed the basis of Russell’s new memoir, Encore, which is hitting shelves this week.

“I’m singing better than I’ve ever sung and just loving life,” he told the hosts.

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
