Mrs Brown's Boys set for 'chaotic' Christmas special as Brendan O'Carroll drops clue

Mrs Brown's Boys returns to BBC One with new series

Mrs Brown's Boys is geared up for yet another hilarious Christmas and New Year's special, as the sitcom's creator Brendan O'Carroll teases more festive chaos in the Brown household.

Fresh from clinching the Best Comedy title at the National Television Awards, Brendan spilled to RadioTimes.com about the anticipated shenanigans awaiting fans. Despite revealing that it's not written just yet, Brendan promises another round of mayhem.

He teased: "I can foresee Mrs Brown's Christmas will be just as chaotic as ever. Except this year, I think she's going to be happy with her Christmas tree."

While reveling in the victory at the NTAs where Mrs Brown's Boys triumphed over rivals such as Ghosts, Not Going Out, Brassic, and The Gentlemen, Brendan gratefully said: "I want to thank the audience who voted. We make it for you, so thank you very much for responding like you did, [we] appreciate it."

The show's latest NTA success marks its sixth invasion of the top Comedy award, solidifying its status as a Christmas television tradition.

However, despite its consistent appearance during the festive season, the show has faced backlash and complaints from those weary of its recurring holiday theme, reports the Mirror.

The BBC rang in January with a New Year special of Mrs Brown's Boy, but fans were not enthused by more of the Brown family's uproarious exploits, as they took to social media to voice their discontent.

One disgruntled viewer expressed their frustration, saying: "Just no no no!! Ratings down, reviews getting worse, just going from bad to worse! Stop funding this mess @BBC #MrsBrownsBoys stop it limping on and on! Give funding to new comedy!!!" Another chimed in with a scathing remark: "2024 and still we have new Mrs f***ing Browns Boys #mrsbrownsboys." (sic)

A third lamented the show's decline in humour: "14 minutes in and still not laughed. #mrsbrownsboys used to be so funny!!" (sic).

Despite the criticism, show creator Brendan is well aware of the mixed reactions his series has garnered over time.

Speaking to the Daily Star, he acknowledged the divisive nature of comedy: "First of all, I'm well aware that comedy is very subjective. What some people like, other people just detest. So I don't take it too seriously."

Mrs Brown's Boys is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
