Dan Walker feels 'awkward' after being called babe

Yorkshire Great And Small got “awkward” for Dan Walker after he was subjected to an unexpected nickname.

Former BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker and ex-Blue Peter star Helen Skelton have teamed up for the Channel 5 docu-series which debuted on Thursday, September 12.

The programme sees the friends and TV personalities explore Yorkshire’s “natural beauty and seek out its hidden gems”, with the first episode starting off in Malham.

The pair were ready to explore the Malham Cove, a limestone formation that had been carved out during the last Ice Age, as well as visit the Ribblehead Viaduct.

But it was during their walk among some stunning scenery that Helen caught her co-star off guard with an unforeseen nickname.

As they continued to explore Malham Cove, Helen was walking behind Dan when she mumbled a joke which ended with the 41-year-old calling him “babe”.

There was an elongated pause when she questioned: “Did I just call you babe?”

He replied: “Yeah I was trying to ignore it. Slightly awkward if I’m honest.”

Dan laughed as she said: “First and last I think.”

He then agreed: “Yeah never, ever do that again”, with her giggling “no” as the pair walked on.

Despite the blunder, it appears Dan and Helen have a great friendship with him, previously sharing that they’ve “never had a bad word”.

Speaking to TV Times, he said: "We're similar and we care about each other.

"But we laugh at each other, too, and, on our walks, we ask silly questions and list things like our top 10 Helens, from Helen Hunt to Helen of Troy. Helen Skelton was No 7!"

Helen also commented: “Dan is the clever one and knows all the historical references and sings a lot, but we both bring morale, jokes and banter."

Yorkshire Great And Small continues every Thursday at 8pm on Channel 5.
