GMB's Kate Garraway shares Derek message from kids she's 'glad' they didn't say

NTAs 2024: Kate Garraway collects award

Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway has revealed the heart-wrenching message from her children that left her completely "floored".

The 57 year old TV presenter triumphed in the Best Authored Documentary category at the National Television Awards for a third time last night. Her documentary, Kate Garraway: Derek's Story, chronicled the life of her husband Derek Draper as he battled with the aftermath of Covid-19.

Sadly, Derek, a former political lobbyist, passed away at the age of 56 in January following a prolonged fight with the long-term effects of the virus. Discussing her win on Thursday's Good Morning Britain, Kate expressed how emotional the victory was for her and her children, Darcy and Billy.

Speaking to hosts Ed Balls and Susanna Reid, she said: "Very emotional for us. The children, when we came off stage, burst into tears, and Bill said, 'In the end, I did want to speak.'

"Neither of them wanted to say anything obviously I was very happy for them to. He said 'I wanted to say dad lives on in our hearts'. I said 'I'm so glad you didn't because I think that would have floored me and I wouldn't have been able to speak,'" reports the Mirror.

She continued: "So personal for us. Thank you to everyone who voted. Not for me but for all the carers."

Fans swarmed to social media to celebrate Kate's triumph, with heartfelt messages flooding in. A supportive viewer expressed: "Congratulations Kate, Darcy and Billy on winning this award. You've had to bare your souls at the most difficult and cherished moments. Your selflessness has put the reality and human side in the public eye to fight for carers. Thank you!"

Others echoed this sentiment, as another fan exclaimed: "So pleased for you Kate - well deserved for Derek and you... keep going girl!! And congratulations to your 20th Anniversary, it sucks when you are alone for this."

Meanwhile, a third simply stated: "Congratulations Kate."

In an emotionally charged speech while receiving her National Television Award with her children beside her, Kate humbly admitted: "I really genuinely did not expect this, goodness me. This is a bittersweet one isn't it?"

She added, reflecting on the poignant journey they had embarked on: "It's very bitter to be here, with the gorgeous Darcey and Billy. I promised them they didn't have to say anything. We're halfway through the first year of firsts really. A first Easter and first birthday, without Derek. It's so strange to be here for the first Television Awards without him."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
