Mrs Brown's Boys took home an unexpected win at the National Television Awards on Wednesday, leaving some viewers disappointed.

The popular BBC comedy, starring Brendan O'Carroll as the quick-witted Agnes Brown and created and written by O'Carroll himself, took home the Best Comedy award, sparking mixed reactions online. The show was up against Brassic, The Gentlemen, Ghosts, and Lee Mack’s Not Going Out.

One viewer raged: "Mrs Brown’s Boys is the biggest pile of w*** ever to be classed as comedy. Retweet if you agree?" Meanwhile, a second person added: " I watched about 5 minutes of it years ago and couldn't bear it. I do know a few people that love it though."

A third angry viewer chimed in: " I can’t believe it’s still on air let alone winning awards. Absolutely ridiculous." Celebrities turned out in force for the star-studded event, hosted by comedian Joel Dommett on Wednesday, September 11.

Following their win, the cast of the long-running show, which has been on air since 2011, appeared delighted as they posed for photos. Dressed in their glamorous outfits, they were later seen outside with their trophy. The show’s official social media page shared the excitement, posting: "Thank you so much for voting for us—wow, we didn’t expect that!"

Fans quickly joined in the celebration, with one comment reading, "Yay, well done & well deserved!" and another adding, "Congratulations to you all."

They also shared a clip of O'Carroll and his co-stars on stage: "First of all I want to thank the audience, who voted. We make it for you so thank you very much for responding."

Mrs Brown's Boys has become a cherished part of the festive season in the UK. Since it first aired more than a decade ago, the show has consistently delivered special Christmas episodes which have gone down well with viewers at home.

Back in December, Brendan shared that his family and some cast members, especially those from Ireland, have a tradition of gathering in pajamas at his house to watch the Mrs. Brown's Boys Christmas special.

He said: "We have a tradition that the family and some of the cast, especially the Ireland-based cast, all get into pyjamas and wherever they are they drive over to our house,” O’Carroll, 68, explains.

"And we all sit in our pyjamas watching the Christmas special on Christmas night, and Jenny [his wife who plays Cathy in the show] and I of course watch it like that,” he chuckles, hiding his face in his hands. “But it becomes a pyjama party and it’s a lovely night."

"It has become very much a part of our Christmas and I think it’s become very much a part of a lot of people’s Christmas, kind of like Morecambe and Wise was for me."
