Escape to the Country's Jules Hudson is once again grabbing the spotlight on BBC One, showcasing idyllic rural retreats. The multi-talented 54 year old Essex native has followed a varied career path prior to gracing our screens.

From his early days straight out of school delving into Field Archaeology at the University of Wales, leading to a Master's degree in the discipline, Jules took a turn towards military life when he attended military training at the prestigious RMA Sandhurst, Berkshire, at the ripe age of 23.

Opting out of an army career initially, Jules ventured into television. However, the call to serve proved strong, and after ten years in TV, he joined the British Army with the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers.

Speaking candidly with Express.co.uk about his return to military service in 2017, he confided, "I went back again to be commissioned in the Royal Engineers and that was the bravest thing I've ever done. It was pretty daunting. I did come out the other end okay but most of my comrades were half my age."

In an interview with the Daily Post, reflecting on whether he had any regrets, he revealed, "Funnily enough, I went back last year and got my commission, 25 years late. I'm now a Second Lieutenant in the Army Reserve."

His foray into the military significantly shaped his subsequent roles on various BBC military history programmes.

Forces News shared a glimpse into Jules' philosophy, quoting his favoured saying, "Lead, follow or get out of the way" words famously uttered by General George S. Patton, one of Jules most admired figures from the military world.

In his words, he embraced this principle: "I think that's a mantra that has helped me judge what to do with my life ever since."

He had initially aimed to join the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment, a part of the Royal Armoured Corps, often referred to as the Armoured Farmers.

However, his tenure at Sandhurst coincided with a Strategic Defence and Security Review, leading to him being slated to join The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards due to defence reshuffles.

After a decade in television, he was commissioned into the British Army as a Reservist with the Royal Monmouthshire Royal Engineers.

He is currently assigned to the 77 Brigade a unit comprising both Regular and Reserve personnel, and has since been involved in Op Cabrit in Estonia.

Jules took to Instagram to express his respect for the Armed Forces, marking the latest D-Day anniversary alongside his son, Jack.
