Bargain Hunt host says 'I'm so sorry' as show turns tense

Bargain Hunt host Roo Irvine had nothing but sympathies for the Blue team as she offered up her apologies saying: "I'm so sorry," on Wednesday's episode.

The BBC star felt awful for Ruth and David who had spent a pretty penny on a number of eye-catching items that were actually pipped to do well at auction but failed to capture the attention of any of the Irish audience in attendance on the day.

Ruth and David had spent nearly all of their £300 cash on their own items to flog at auction, leaving their antiques expert for the day, Thomas Forrestor, just £15 to spend on an item he thought would make them some serious cash.

The married couple splurged their cash on a silver pocket mirror, among other items, but nothing seemed to float anyone's boat, despite the auctioneer telling presenter Roo before they went on sale that he'd "liked" some of their purchases.

"Blues I am so sorry, you've got some beautiful items. That sold for £50, you lost £110, it's taken you from minus £10 to minus £120. I'm so sorry, you were so close to profit but it's not over yet," said Roo, who appeared to be genuinely heartbroken for them.

Trying to finish on a positive note, Roo added: "Here comes the cavalry in the form of Thomas Forrestor." Roo explained: "Now, you left him a whopping £15 but he can't lose more than £15 for his bonus five."

She urged David and Ruth: "Keep your eyes closed, nice and tight, Thomas over to you," as he presented his item for auction to them. At this point, David and Ruth were down to minus £120 after suffering a massive £110 loss on the striking pocket mirror.

It was now up to Thomas, their expert, to recoup some serious money to see them with a fighting chance of fending off the red team. The expert pulled out a stunning miniature blue vase with all the hallmarks which he managed to scoop up for the £15 budget they'd allocated him.

The little china piece was a good spot and proved to be incredibly popular at auction. He managed to claw back a £70 profit for the Blue's on their staggering £120 loss, meaning they were down to just minus £50.

However, it wasn't enough to beat the red team, who also didn't have a windfall on Wednesday's episode either. The Red team, that included Raymond and Linda, managed to win the show on minus £7.

They'd also not had huge sucess with their expensive chance item which lost them a huge pot of cash. Luckily, Linda seemed to have a good eye and noticed a rare brass item and tea set that she scooped up for next to nothing.

The auctioneer told Roo beforehand that he personally didn't like either of her choices but they were cheap purchases and did actually make up some of their shortfall which ultimately put them in front.

Bargain Hunt airs on BBC One, weekdays from 12:15pm and can be streamed via iPlayer.
