Bradley Walsh makes confession about The Chase role and quips he was 'destitute'

The Chase: Bradley says he had £3.28 in the bank in 2008

Bradley Walsh, the host of The Chase, made a surprising revelation about how he landed his role on the popular ITV quiz show during its latest episode.

The 64-year-old was back for another thrilling episode of the show on Tuesday (September 3), where four more contestants faced off against chaser Jenny Ryan in hopes of winning a substantial cash prize.

During a chat with contestant number three, Jay, Bradley enquired about his profession.

Jay elaborated that his job involves holding banks accountable and ensuring they adhere to certain protocols. He also brought up the notorious "credit crunch" of 2008.

Describing his work, Jay stated: "So basically, I do reports to make sure banks don't overspend or lend too much."

He further added: "I'm making sure it doesn't happen, so you know when the credit crunch happened in 2008, I'm making sure that doesn't happen," reports the Mirror.

Referring to the recession, Bradley humorously admitted that he had a tough time during that period. He confessed: "In 2008, I tell you I became destitute! No, seriously I was literally down to £3.28 that's all I had. And I had to swallow my pride and join this show!"

While the contestants chuckled at Bradley's confession, viewers of the show found it quite entertaining as well. One fan commented on X: "Bradley is so funny."

Another chimed in: "Well the audience think Bradley's jokes are funny..."

Despite Bradley's jesting remark, there is no evidence to suggest it's true. In 2008, he was fully engaged with theatre productions and TV shows such as The Sarah Jane Adventures and Spin Star.

Recently, it was disclosed that the television legend earns a staggering £25,000 per week, contributing to his £20million fortune. Reports suggest that his company, Wingit Productions Limited, saw an increase of £1.3 million last year due to his rising popularity.

In June, The Sun reported that Bradley invested £5million of his wealth into property, stocks, and shares, boosting his investment portfolio to a whopping £6.5million.

The star also recently splashed out £400,000 on a plot of land in Essex, situated next to the country's busiest M25 motorway.

The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV1.
