Liverpool icon Jamie Carragher has labelled the signing of Mario Balotelli as one that was doomed from the outset. Splashing out £16million in the summer of 2014, Liverpool recruited the controversial Italian forward from AC Milan following Luis Suarez's departure to Barcelona.

Reeling from the void left by the Uruguayan, then-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers quipped about Balotelli's propensity for causing "trouble" upon his arrival. Despite being instrumental in Manchester City's iconic Premier League victory during the 2011/12 season, Balotelli's stint at Liverpool was far from successful, not living up to the fiery potential he once possessed.

With a disappointing tally of just four goals in 28 appearances, the troubled talent found himself heading back to Milan on loan before Jurgen Klopp decided to cut ties entirely, seeing no place for him in Liverpool's future plans. During The Overlap's Fan Debate, brought to you by Sky Bet, when reviewing some of the best and worst Premier League transfers, Chloe Bloxam from The Redmen TV picked Balotelli as one of the club's worst signings, a sentiment echoed by Carragher, who was joined by Paul Scholes.

The Sky Sports pundit commented: I'd forgotten about Balotelli, that was almost one of those signings that you almost know it's going to fail before it even happened." Now a free agent after a second stint with Turkish outfit Adana Demirspor, Balotelli engaged in a war of words with Rodgers after his Liverpool departure when taking to X to sarcastically post: "Brendan Rodgers you are also the best manager I ever had" accompanied by a cry-laughing emoji and a kiss.

The jab from the Italian came after the Celtic boss jokingly named him the best player he'd ever coached as Balotelli reignited their online feud last year during an interview with TVPlay where he remarked: "Brendan Rodgers is the worst coach I have ever had. He was number one as far as training sessions were concerned, what with keeping possession of the ball and the small-sided games. But as a person he was a disaster."

The controversial striker was the last Italian to be signed by Liverpool before their recent swoop for Juventus' Federico Chiesa, who joined the Reds for £12million. Chiesa was spotted at Old Trafford on Sunday, witnessing his new team thrash Manchester United 3-0, marking a third straight victory in the Premier League under Arne Slot's leadership.

The winger was purchased as depth for Liverpool's right wing role with Mohamed Salah the only senior player in that position. The Egyptian has started his eighth season in red in superb form, netting three goals and contributing three assists in the first three games.
