Coronation Street exit 'confirmed' as icon leaves cobbles after 13 years on soap

Corrie: Lisa George on her next steps after leaving The Cobbles

Coronation Street's Lisa George has confirmed she will be leaving the soap this week to take on a role in a major panto production.

Lisa, who has been a regular on the ITV soap since 2011, playing the outspoken Beth Tinker, announced her departure during a chat with Corrie co-star Jodie Prenger, Craig Doyle and Sian Welby on This Morning.

On Wednesday (August 28), the actress revealed that she would be moving on from the cobbles of Weatherfield. She also shared that she would be starring in the family pantomime Cinderella at the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon, trading in Underworld's sewing machines for the role of the Fairy Godmother.

The show is set to run from December 7, 2024, to January 5, 2025. During the conversation, Lisa disclosed that Beth's final appearance would be on Friday, August 30, 2024, but did not clarify whether her exit would be permanent, reports the Mirror.

In an awkward moment, when Sian asked her about what was next for Beth Tinker, Lisa confessed: "I don't know. I can't remember", reminding viewers that she had filmed her last scenes eight weeks prior.

Craig then asked Lisa how she felt about leaving the show, suggesting it must be "pretty emotional, I'd imagine?" Lisa admitted: "It's just strange, I don't think it's sunken in yet. I don't think it will until I'm not on screen anymore. The fact that Friday, will be my last scenes, then I think it will start (to sink in)."

Soap enthusiasts will remember Beth's illicit use of Underworld's equipment to stitch logos onto fake T-shirts as part of her shady side business. In recent episodes, Beth was caught out by DS Lisa Swain's daughter Betsy, who has been interning at the factory.

This led Beth to involve Betsy in her side business for a share of the earnings to ensure her secret remains safe. Earlier this week, Beth gave a wad of cash to her police officer son Craig Tinker, asking him to safeguard it.

Beth disclosed her plans to secretly organise a wedding for her partner Kirk Sutherland. Craig was doubtful but chose to support his mother's scheme. However, the situation is about to escalate as Carla Connor might discover what she's planning.

Reports suggest that Lisa George, who plays Beth, has left the soap after filming her final scenes following a 13-year stint. Last month, amid these reports, the actress enjoyed a night out with her fellow cast members, fuelling further speculation about her departure from the cobbles.

Earlier this year, she dismissed exit rumours during an interview with The Mirror.

Coronation Street airs on ITV1 and can be streamed via ITVX.
