Iconic soap star breaks silence on axe after 30 years as he says 'it's been my life'

Neighbours: Ryan Moloney discusses his departure from soap

One iconic soap actor has broken his silence on leaving the show after 30 incredible years.

Neighbours icon Ryan Moloney has played Jarrod ‘Toadie’ Rebecchi in the Australian soap opera since 1995, when he was just 15 years old. But now he’s set to say goodbye to his character, admitting he “wanted to leave”.

Ryan admitted the character has “been his life” for the past three decades as he discussed the upcoming Death in the Outback special week with Good Morning Britain hosts Richard Madeley and Charlotte Hawkins.

He also opened up about his future – admitting he’s “not particularly attached” to “continuing on” in the acting world, and would prefer to work on a farm.

On the ITV show, Charlotte admitted: “I’m slightly worried that this is called Death in the Outback, which seems to suggest that your departure could be a terminal one.”

But Ryan wasn’t fazed, admitting: “Yeah, good huh? It’s a soap, so we’ve got to do these things, you know? I’m pretty excited – I’m excited about the next adventures. I’ve had a great time on Neighbours and I’ve learnt a lot, and there’s a lot of skills that I’ve got now, so I’m very much looking forward to what else is going to happen.”

He added: “It’s been my life, really. I started when I was 15, so I’ve grown up on the show and me personally I’ve gotten married, had kids, built farms, learnt lots of other bits and pieces. It’s very much my life. I’ve spent more time on Neighbours than I have off.”

Ryan said it becomes a “schizophrenic” amalgamation as his own personality started to “blend” with Toadie’s.

But he had another update on his future in acting, confessing: “I’m really just leaving the slate open for whatever. I’m not particularly attached to continuing on. I’ve been acting for over 30 years now, if that continues then fantastic. Directing has really got my synapses firing again, so hopefully that happens.

“But I’m actually really quite happy building farm fences and playing with animals and spending time with the kids. So if I never get employed and I do that again, then happy days!”

Richard commented: “That’s a good place to be!” as Charlotte agreed: “Good for you!”

Despite being happy with the decision, Ryan admitted in an interview earlier this year that it “wasn’t his choice” to leave, admitting: “I’ve been wanting to leave for quite a long time, but Neighbours is one of those jobs that you work with awesome people.

“You get paid really well. And if you had a mate who had one of these jobs, you’d be saying, ‘oh, mate, what are you doing?’ You’ve got to stay there. See it out for as long as you can.”
