Game of Thrones: Official Series Trailer as epic saga closes

Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke will lead the upcoming Cold War drama PONIES.

Streaming service Peacock has given the espionage thriller a straight-to-series order.

Daenerys Targaryen star Emilia has not only bagged the lead role but she’ll also be stepping up behind the scenes as executive producer.

The series was initially given a cast-contingent series order, which is going full steam ahead now Emilia has been cast.

Her most recent TV venture was in Marvel’s Disney+ series Secret Invasion and she also co-starred with Chiwetel Ejiofor in the rom-com The Pod Generation last year.

PONIES refers to “persons of no interest” in the intelligence services, and this drama will follow two of them who anonymously work as secretaries in the American Embassy in Moscow, 1977.

When their husbands are killed in mysterious circumstances in the USSR during the height of the Cold War, they both leave their desks behind and become CIA agents.

The Peacock series is co-created and co-written by Susanna Fogel, who directed The Spy Who Dumped Me and episodes of The Flight Attendant, and David Iserson, a screenwriter who has worked on Mad Men and Mr Robot.

Jessica Rhoades, producer behind Black Mirror and Station Eleven, will executive produce.

Emilia will portray Bea, “an over-educated, Russian-speaking child of Soviet immigrants”.

She’ll be joined by Twila, “a small-town girl who is as abrasive as she is fearless”, who has yet to be cast.

“Together, they work to uncover a vast Cold War conspiracy and solve the mystery that made them widows in the first place,” per an official synopsis.

The Game of Thrones star is clearly thrilled the news has been made official and eager to get started.

She celebrated the announcement by posting the report from Deadline on her Instagram page, accompanied with a simple excited caption of several exclamation points.

Game of Thrones is available to stream on Sky Go and NOW.
