Eamonn Holmes reveals his heartbreaking warning to son as he gets emotional on GB News

Eamonn Holmes talks about warning his son over drinking

Eamonn Holmes has opened up on a warning he gave his eldest son Declan when he wanted to go on holiday on his own as a teenager.

The subject came up on GB News Breakfast as he debated Location, Location, Location presenter Kirstie Allsopp's decision to allow her son to go interrailing at 15.

After actress Debbie Arnold mentioned the recent Jay Slater tragedy he recalled: "I remember, my eldest lad wanted to go off on holiday.

"The thing they were all doing at 18 at school was firing shots [of alcohol]. They would all take these shots and [it was all about], 'How many shots, can you take?'

"Except they could actually kill you!" he exclaimed. "I took him aside and I said, son this could kill you doing this."

Declan, now 35, is the eldest of Eamonn's children. His mother is the TV presenter's ex-wife Gabriella. He lives in Belfast with his wife Jenny and their two daughters, Emilia and Isabella.

Meanwhile, he and estranged wife Ruth Langsford have one child together, son Jack.

Although all of his children are now adults, Eamonn admitted being a cautious parent as he pondered the Kirstie Allsopp situation on air.

Discussing it wth co-host Ellie Costello he said: "I'm quite a cautious parent. I don't like school trips, for instance. What is the point?" he asked.

"I've had to send my kids off to do white water rafting and canoeing and blooming rivers around the country.

"And I think, what is the point? Why do they need to know [that]. It's not fun capsizing in a canoe with your friends in the great outdoors.

"I get nervous. I think, 'no, not, not for me'. There's lots of things. I would ban," he confessed. "School trips - I just think no!"

GB News Breakfast is on weekdays at 6am.
