Comedy legend addresses Celebrity Traitors rumours and says 'They can't afford me'

The Traitors: Harry Clark shocks Mollie as he wins the final

Ricky Gervais has shut down rumours that he's set to appear on the celebrity version of The Traitors. The comedy legend replied to a Twitter thread which fuelled speculation that he had been approached to join the line-up.

The 63 year old originally shot to fame for his global success in The Office on BBC One. It was reported by The Sun that the broadcaster was targeting him as one of the A-listers to join the new series.

However, Ricky has since waded in on the conversation and replied: "I love the show and I’m very flattered, but it won’t happen. I’m too busy and there’s no way they could afford me."

Many of his followers sent a flurry of replies in the comments section. One person said: "Please reconsider! You would be amazing to watch on that show. I know non of the cast would know what to do with you."

Another person said: "Do it, do it! Go on do it @rickygervais and you could do it in character of Derek." A third typed: " Oh please Ricky, you would completely win the show!"

It was announced by makers Studio Lambert at the Edinburgh TV Festival last week that a celebrity version of The Traitors will air next year on the BBC.

The Traitors, which already has two series, sees twenty-two contestants split into two teams: Traitors and Faithfuls. Everyone takes part in challenges to help build their prize pot of up to £120,000.

The psychological competition has since become an iconic reality TV show, where the Faithfuls try to suss out who the Traitors are. Any remaining Traitor players at the end of the show end up walking away with the entire prize fund.

When targeting Ricky Gervais, an inside source said to The Sun: “The Beeb want the crème de la crème of stars for the celeb spin-off, and they ideally have to be incredibly smart, funny, and mischievous — and that’s Ricky in three words.

“Behind the scenes, big names have already expressed their interest in taking part from the moment it was revealed the new version of The Traitors was being made.

“So Ricky will be in good company around the Traitors table, but whether he takes part will probably depend on his hugely busy diary.”
