Chelsea star Noni Madueke struck a brilliant first career hat-trick to down Wolves in a convincing 6-2 win at Molineux - and then sent a grovelling apology for controversial comments he made just hours before the game.

Madueke was forced to backtrack from his comments made late on Saturday night after arriving in Wolverhampton, where he made a derogatory reference to the city of Wolverhampton.

"Everything about this place is s**t," Madueke wrote on his Instagram story, before swiftly clarifying that he posted the message on the wrong account.

That had still left the people of Wolverhampton angered by his comments after booing him during the game, and Madueke sought to apologise after Sunday's match, explaining that the post was made in error.

“I just want to apologise to everyone that I might have offended," Madueke told BBC Sport. "It is just a human mistake, an accident.

"It [the post] wasn't meant to be [sent] out on my socials [Instagram account] like that. I'm sure Wolverhampton is a nice town and I'm sorry.”

But one thing Madueke wasn't sorry about was the damage he did on the pitch, scoring a magnificent hat-trick in a man-of-the-match display from the £30million winger.

The 22-year-old opened his account for the new Premier League campaign with a 49th-minute strike, before getting his second goal of the afternoon via a deflection.

And the explosive winger got his third of the afternoon - with all three goals set up by Cole Palmer - with a fine drilled finish past Jose Sa into the corner.

Chelsea's own social media team even poked fun at Wolves, with a tweet from their official X account reading: "He likes it here now", referring to Madueke's post after completing his hat-trick.

Speculation had been rife that Madueke could seek a summer exit after the club spent over £95m to sign Pedro Neto and Joao Felix, with Newcastle one of the teams interested in the former England Under-21 international.

But Maresca may feel more inclined to keep the winger after another impressive display to follow his goal against Servette on Thursday, for which earned a high commendation from his manager in his post-game interview.

"I said many times already from day one, I really like Noni, he's that kind of winger I like," Maresca said after the Wolves game to Sky Sports.

"But the most important thing Noni did today was the run in the 90th minute to defend the counter attack. That showed the mentality of the player and the mentality of the team."
