Iconic '90s American TV series is now available for UK viewers to watch

A popular, American award-winning TV series from the '90s is finally making a comeback in the UK amid talk of a reboot.

Channel 4 will be streaming Ally McBeal for free from the end of this month - and both original fans and new audiences can enjoy the full five seasons of the legal comedy-drama.

The show ran from 1997 to 2002, launching the careers of stars including Lucy Liu and Jane Krakowski. Calista Flockhart starred as the title character Ally, a lawyer working in the Boston law firm Cage and Fish.

The entire boxset will be available on Channel 4's free streaming service from August 30, reports The Sun. It comes after the newspaper previously revealed how US channel ABC was reviving the Emmy-winning series.

The show’s original creator David E. Kelley has given his blessing to the new writer, Karin Gist, who was behind US medical drama Grey's Anatomy.

A source said: “There has been talk of reviving Ally McBeal for years, as the central premise is so desirable to modern audiences. It’s the perfect female-driven character drama, really.

“Frankly, it was always ahead of its time, so execs see a reboot as a total no-brainer. They are desperate for Calista to jump on board but hope the scripts will convince her to sign up."

Although a legal drama, the main focus of the series is the romantic and personal lives of the main characters. The series had many offbeat and frequently surreal running gags and themes, such as Ally's tendency to immediately fall over whenever she met somebody she found attractive,

After premiering in 1997, the series received critical acclaim in its early seasons, winning Golden Globes and Emmy Awards. The series was cancelled by Fox after five seasons.

Ally McBeal is available to stream on Channel 4 from August 30
