Happy Valley's James Norton leads ITV thriller described as 'waking nightmare'

Happy Valley's James Norton defends nudity in new role

Happy Valley star James Norton is set to star in a new ITV series alongside Jessica Brown. The actor, who is well known for his role as Tommy Lee Royce in the smash hit BBC series, will feature as part of the cast of Playing Nice.

The four-part psychological thriller is based on the best-selling novel by author JP Delaney. Set in Cornwall, the show sees two couples who discover that their toddlers were switched at birth in a hospital mix-up, with the group facing the dilemma of either keeping the sons they raised or reclaiming their biological children.

Living a waking nightmare, Pete (James Norton) and Maddie (Niamh Algar) are jettisoned into the world of the other couple; Miles (James McArdle) and Lucy (Jessica Brown Findlay). At first it seems all four are agreed on a solution, but it soon becomes clear that hidden motives are at play, with the couples assessing how much they can trust each other.

James produced the series alongside Kitty Kaletsky, meanwhile Grace Ofori-Attah and Kate Hewitt took on directing duties.

On behalf of Rabbit Track Pictures Kitty Kaletsky and James Norton commented: “Playing Nice was the first book we optioned after launching Rabbit Track and we feel immensely proud of the project it has become.

“I’m also excited to be partnering with ITV again on my second drama series, and can’t wait for Playing Nice to hit TV screens next year.”

ITV Drama Commissioner Helen Perry also teased the series as she added: “Playing Nice is an enthralling thriller with a knotty moral dilemma at its heart. Not only will viewers be hooked, they’ll be left questioning: ‘what would I do...?’ as Grace’s superb script raises questions about the nature of parenting and how far we’ll go for those we love.”

Playing Nice is set to air later this year
