Good Morning Britain: Kwasi Kwarteng says EU is 'sending a message'

Ex-Tory Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng clashed with Kate Garraway as he discussed the upcoming charges for British holidaymakers to enter Europe.

Starting next summer, UK tourists will be hit with a €7 fee for a visa waiver to visit EU countries, as part of plans that have been in the pipeline for some time. The former Cabinet member, 49, hinted that the UK might retaliate by imposing a similar levy on EU nationals visiting Britain.

However, he advised caution on such measures. Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Kwarteng faced scrutiny from Kate, who suggested the public may have been deceived about Brexit consequences.

She remarked: "People were always told that there wouldn't be a problem and now there is."

While discussing whether this was a Brexit fallout, Kwarteng, who resigned at the last General Election after his economic policies caused turmoil during Liz Truss's brief tenure, stated: "We're not going to revisit that debate."

He added: "I think that the EU is essentially sending a message, you know, we're the EU - if you're out you have to pay to come in. Which is not ideal. But I think that we could be in a situation, I don't know what the Labour government will do, but I imagine we could reciprocate, which isn't helpful. We should maybe get together and try and ease that sort of trouble."

The European Union (EU) is set to roll out the European Travel Information and Authorisation Scheme (ETIAS) in mid-2025, which will affect millions of travellers. The scheme will require citizens from 60 visa-exempt countries, including the UK, to apply for travel authorisation before visiting any of the 30 European nations involved, reports the Mirror.

These include popular holiday destinations such as Spain, Portugal, France, and Italy. The system is akin to the ESTA visa waiver that Britons must apply for when travelling to the United States, costing $21.

The EU's version will carry a €7 fee for all individuals aged between 18 and 70, while those under 18 or over 70 can apply for free. According to current plans, the visa waiver will be valid for three years or until the holder's passport expires, whichever comes first.

The scheme has been in development for several years and was initially slated to launch in 2022 but has faced numerous setbacks. However, post-Brexit arrangements mean it will not apply to travel between the UK and Ireland.

EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson confirmed on Friday that the system will be "live in 2025".
