Star Wars: The Acolyte will not be returning for a second season following the airing of the first instalment in June and July on Disney+ this year, according to Deadline.

The first season aired eight episodes and featured actress Amandla Stenberg as twin sisters Verosha 'Osha' and Mae-ho 'Mae' Aniseya. As well as Amanda, the cast also included Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Jodie Turner-Smith, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Charlie Barnett, Dean-Charles Chapman and Carrie-Anne Moss.

As part of the Star Wars franchise, Acolyte was set at the end of the High Republic era before the events of the Skywalker Saga and followed a Jedi invesigation into a series of crimes.

Despite getting fairly positive reviews from critics, fans were left divided by the series which overall impacted viewership. It ranked in top position for the biggest series premiere on Disney+ this year with 4.8 million views in it's first day but failed to sustain the momentum and dropped out of the top ten in week three.

Since the news of it's cancellation was announced, fans have been sharing their reactions and it seems like they aren't happy after season one ended with cliffhangers. Unhappy about their questions not being answered, one Reddit user penned: "Good thing there weren't a bunch of cliffhangers. Oh, wait..."

Another fan expressed: "The show runner literally said she designed season 1 to stand alone and not need a season 2, just in case a season 2 doesn't happen......turns out that was a lie." Somebody else commented: "So the entire show was pointless, as that story will never be wrapped up. Cool."

Yet another upset viewer said: "Man I am bummed out about this. I really liked the snow and was excited to see more of it. What a cliffhanger to leave it on and not continue." While a fifth added: "I did not like it AT all. But I hate unfinished stories. I wish it was norm that when a show is canceled it gets a follow up episode or season to close it out."
