Richard Madeley apologises to Jennie McAlpine for on-air blunder about her tenure on Coron

Richard Arnold apologises to Jennie McAlpine on GMB

Good Morning Britain's Richard Madeley found himself backpedaling after an on-air blunder which required him to apologise to Coronation Street actress Jennie McAlpine.

Jennie, famed for her role as Fiz on the popular soap, joined GMB to discuss her character's intense new plot twist, including an unexpected visit from Tyrone's former flame Alina, who's bringing along their child.

During the segment, Richard incorrectly credited Jennie with a staggering 27 years on the show. A shocked Jennie swiftly set the record straight, noting to both Richard and co-host Kate Garraway that she's celebrating 23 years since stepping onto the cobbled streets of Weatherfield, prompting an immediate apology from the host.

Richard said: "I'm just going through the notes here, it's extraordinary, you've been in Corrie now longer than Ena Sharples, Hilda Ogden, Elsie Tanner... does it feel 27 years?"

In response, Kate corrected him with, "23 years!" leading Jennie to retort: "23 yes, don't age me that much Richard!" before richard said: "I apologise," reports the Mirror.

Reflecting on her tenure on the show, Jennie, who was a teenager when she began and is now a mother-of-three, stated: "23 years, yes 2001. I've been in it now longer than I wasn't in it - I was 17 when I joined."

Jennie's latest storyline could spell further turmoil for Fiz. Following Tyrone's infidelity with Alina, who left for Romania only to reappear at a Weatherfield supermarket, claims Tyrone is the father of her young son.

During the interview, Richard asked about Jennie's creative influence in the role asking: "Do you have any input? You've been doing it for so long are you able to say maybe to a scriptwriter, 'Fiz wouldn't say that' or Fiz wouldn't do that'. Have you got some input and a bit of control over the character?"

Jennie responded, ensuring the integrity of the production team remains paramount: "No and I don't think I'd want to really because we have such a brilliant team and it's massive. There's researchers, storyliners and the actual script writers and producers. They come up with things, and have been coming up with things, for over 60 years and I think you just have to trust them."

She elaborated on the dynamic nature of working on the show, noting: "Some things you think 'don't know' maybe work better than you even thought they would, and some things you think will be brilliant but don't go so well so I think you've got to trust them and that's life of the cobbles. You never know what's going to happen with your character."

GMB is on ITV weekdays at 6am
