Outlander fans 'work out' emotional finale after Sam Heughan pushed for 'different' ending

Sam Heughan reveals the souvenir he'll take from Outlander set

Outlander fans have shared their latest theories for how the final season of the historical fantasy series might end. Viewers have discussed how the show’s finale might differ from Diana Gabaldon’s last book, which will have its own separate ending.

It comes after Jamie Fraser actor Sam Heughan revealed last year that he has pushed for the Starz drama to have a “different ending”. Outlander is based on the bestselling novels by Gabaldon, who has written nine of 10 planned volumes.

Meanwhile, the TV show will conclude a few books before the official ending to the series of novels, meaning it is likely the final on-screen ending will differ from the final scenes from Gabaldon, which have not yet been published.

Speaking to The Herald about season 8, Heughan admitted he has pushed for an ending to the TV show that felt right for the fans who had been watching the show for years.

He revealed the series was "supposed to finish this season" but he "didn’t want to finish without finishing the story" which resulted in the Outlander cast "going back to do one more [season]".

“I want to finish the story, not only for myself but for the fans. It wouldn’t feel satisfactory to just end it, left in the air," the actor explained.

It seems Heughan is doing his best to have a say in how fans wave goodbye to their beloved Outlander cast, with the actor going on to say: "Diana is still writing the 10th book and there is plenty more that we haven’t been able to cover.

"We will have to end it some way. Perhaps not a way that the books end it. I am pushing for a different ending.

"I don’t think I am going to get what I want,” he added, before reasoning that - while the finale “is never going to be satisfactory for everyone” - hopefully fans will get given "some sort of finality”.

Meanwhile, on Reddit, fans shared their thoughts on the television show’s alternative ending.

In a post entitled “Series ending predictions”, Outlander fan @stoppingbythewoods wrote: “So now we’re at the final episode being filmed, anyone have any predictions? They’re using material from BEES this season, I haven’t read the book yet (about to finish Fiery Cross) and I would love spoilers on what you think will happen.” (sic)

Answering the request, one fan responded: “It can’t be exactly book 9’s ending as it has a sort of cliffhanger I think it will be a happy ending, whole family together on the ridge, with the little new addition; William knocking on the door and reconciled with Jamie. Jamie grudgingly reconciled with John as well.” (sic)

Another theorised: “I’m thinking the ending will be something wholesome and calm, after all the storms they’ve been through. We know they’re not going to kill off Jamie and Claire. I hope it still makes me sob, tbh.” (sic)

A third agreed: “I kind of want to see them grow old and die happy together. Maybe a final montage of the grandkids growing up, great grandkids and then ending with a funeral and a shot of their headstone.”

One more expressed their hopes at a positive ending, sharing: “I personally think the storyline will be a circle, like the time travel. Jamie and Claire planting the ancestors of the forget-me-not at the stones to reach at post WW2 Claire.” (sic)

Outlander season 7 part 2 will be available to stream on Starz in the US and on MGM in the UK, with episodes arriving on Friday, 22nd November.
