Eamonn Holmes has praised Crocs multiple times already this year, saying he wears them to aid his mobility - but the plastic, hole-filled shoes are hardly a fashion accessory.

Today, co-host Ellie playfully ribbed him live on GB News, as he was forced to deny that he wears "high heeled" versions of the shoe. Their banter comes as a survey referenced on the show revealed that seven out of 10 people believe they should be "a thing of the past".

Ellie read out viewers' letters about the love-them-or-hate-them brand, with one complaining they were too "slippery" and branding them "an accident waiting to happen". However, Eamonn protested that he "hadn't noticed that" - and that avoiding accidents had been one of his main priorities.

The GB News reader had previously tripped and plummetted down a staircase, requiring surgery for his injuries, so he's all too aware of how agonisingly painful a fall can be. His co-star Ellie accused him of wearing "high-heeled Crocs" after a photo flashed up on the screen of Eamonn wearing what seemed to be a wedge version of the footwear.

He insisted: "There's not a high heel on them!" However, Ellie begged to differ - and a viewer later appreciatively wrote in to thank them for the laughs, saying: "We need some light-hearted banter on the show!"

It isn't the first time that Eamonn has been playfully mocked for his choice of footwear, as he was ribbed about it on the show last month as well.

However, the broadcaster - who has a "navy version with a red racing stripe down the side" - defended his decision to wear Crocs, claiming they give "good suspension in the knees".

Podiatrist Dr Vanessa Barrow also praised the shoes on Pure Wow, stating: "As we mature, we lose fat in our feet because our collagen starts wearing thin, so Crocs will feel good for people who need that extra cushion."

They are also thought to lessen the risk of compression in the toes and to prevent feet from overheating due to the holes in the front.

That said, articles over the years have mocked them for being "grotesque" and "ugly" and they have built up a reputation for being one of Britain's least fashionable footwear choices.

Meanwhile, the banter between Eamonn and Ellie continued today as he quizzed incredulously: "Don't you not think you're a bit old for [going to a Taylor Swift gig]?

"Shouldn't you be doing something more middle of the road?"

However, Ellie - who intends to dress up as a cowgirl at the Wembley Arena show on Thursday - protested that she was younger than 34-year-old Taylor herself.
