BBC Only Connect viewers 'yelling' at their TVs as contestants miss obvious answer

Victoria Coren Mitchell returned to BBC Two on Monday evening with the 20th series of Only Connect. The hotly-anticipated first episode saw teams the Al Frescans and the Midlanders go head to head in the opening heat.

All seemed to be going well until the quizzers reached the third round and had to take on the Connecting Wall.

The challenge features 16 jumbled-up clues which need to be sorted into four connected groups within two and a half minutes.

The Al Frescans successfully deciphered all four groups and got a maximum of 10 points.

The Midlanders, however, found the challenge more tricky and were left scratching their heads over what seemed to be an obvious answer.

They successfully worked out two groups but failed to recognise that Firework, Hot N Cold, ET and Rise are hit songs by Katy Perry.

Instead, they incorrectly guessed that they were Drew Barrymore films.

After The Midlanders lost all three of their lives and the wall became "frozen", Victoria remarked: "If I liked to bite my nails visibly on screen I would have done it there...I think you are clearly not fans of the work of Katy Perry. Katy Perry songs is what they are."

Victoria wasn't the only one left frustrated by the missed answer and viewers rushed to Twitter to react to the tense moment.

One user exclaimed: "Me yelling ‘KATY PERRY SONGS’ at the TV #onlyconnect."

Another wrote: "Well, tonight's Only Connect has made me realise I've a good knowledge of Katy Perry songs and Welsh Castles despite not owning any of her albums or visiting any of the said castles."

A third quipped: "Just got an answer right on Only Connect (yes it was Katy Perry songs)."

And a fourth remarked: "Watching smart people on Only Connect not recognise Katy Perry songs like what planet are you living on?"

When the bell rang marking the end of the quiz, Victoria confirmed that the Al Frescans had triumphed with a score of 28, beating the Midlanders's 18.

The win means the Al Frescans will go through to the next round of the competition while the Midlanders remain at the same stage and will play another match in the hope of making it through.

Only Connect continues Monday, August 19, at 8pm on BBC Two.
