EastEnders exit 'sealed' for legend 31 years after debut following arrest for murder

EastEnders: Sonia cries at the hospital

EastEnders is gearing up for a dramatic twist next week as a popular soap couple finds themselves in handcuffs, accused of a shocking murder.

The show has revealed that Sonia Fowler and Reiss Colwell will be arrested on murder charges. Reiss (played by Johnny Freeman), an accountant, has been grappling with financial woes after falling behind on his wife Debbie's care home bills. Viewers may remember that Debbie fell into a coma following a stroke in the bath.

With his partner Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) expecting a baby, the pressure on Reiss has only intensified. However, he took a terrifying step when he killed Debbie.

In a chilling scene, Reiss suffocated his wife with a pillow, unaware that Sonia had visited Debbie earlier and helped her adjust in bed.

Adding to his list of wrongdoings, Reiss has also swindled Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) and Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) out of thousands of pounds recently. He fabricated a story about a bogus investment scheme for their business, which Sharon fell for.

However, Phil has since demanded his money back, and EastEnders spoilers for the coming week suggest things are about to take a dramatic turn.

As the week begins, Reiss is a bundle of nerves as he faces Phil's deadline for his money. He tries to persuade Sonia to take a day off to escape, but she declines.

Sonia is moved when Kathy proposes to host her engagement party. However, the situation takes a turn when Phil arrives at their doorstep in a fit of rage, leading Reiss to confess that he was supposed to repay him today but can't.

Teddy and Sharon step in to defuse the situation, with Sonia managing to buy them some time by appealing to Sharon. Teddy, however, decides to shoulder Phil's debt.

Later, Sonia is anxious about her eight-week viability scan and is taken aback when Sharon discloses that Teddy has assumed the debt, something Reiss hasn't informed her about. During the scan, Sonia confronts Reiss, stating it's reckless to strike a deal with someone they barely know.

Upon their return to the Square, Martin privately cautions Reiss that the police have been making inquiries about him and Debbie.

Back home, Reiss suffers a panic attack which Sonia attempts to soothe. They proceed to The Vic, where they are celebrating their engagement party until the police show up and arrest both Sonia and Reiss on suspicion of Debbie's murder.

The duo are promptly interrogated by the detectives, who possess tangible evidence that Debbie was murdered.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
