Only Connect: Victoria jokes her 'brain is scrambled'

Victoria Coren Mitchell complained her “brain was scrambled” after making an error on Only Connect. The beloved quiz show returned to BBC Two on Monday (August 12) and saw two teams battling to find connections between seemingly independent clues.

The 20th series of Only Connect saw Victoria, 51, returning to the helm while the three-person Midlanders team went head-to-head with the Al Frescans. During the showdown, the former—consisting of Andrew Mearman, Dominic Rayner and Erica Hiorns—were left stumped when four tiles depicting food were unveiled.

The first image in the series depicted a plate of Sashimi with a ‘0’ in the right-hand corner while the second was a rotisserie chicken with an overlay ‘1’. A picture of biscotti with the digit ‘2’ was next to be unveiled but the team were still scratching their heads by the end of the timer.

Eventually, the trio claimed the fourth and final snap would be of a chocolate cake but their answer was rejected as they weren’t sure of their reasoning. “In that case, I can’t accept your answer,” said Victoria.

“Al Frescans would you like to have a go?” Luckily, the opposing team—comprising of Tom McKechnie, Danielle Cope and Mel Gibbons—realised the digits in the corner of the images correlated to how many times the food item should be cooked.

Therefore they believed the third image would be of triple-cooked chips, which they guessed correctly. “Heston Blumenthal called [it] the greatest chip,” Victoria remarked.

“It caused a great craze of people doing these triple-cooked chips and there was a spike in fires!

“The fire brigade said ‘why did we come up with this?’ because you’re doubling the amount of times you’re frying their a lot more fries.”

Victoria quickly realised she’d said there was a “lot more fries” instead of a “lot more fires” and made a point of admitting to her slip.

“Fries? Fires. I’m doing that thing… I literally said fries when I meant fires. I’ve already been doing this show too long and it’s episode one.

“Oh my word,” she added. “My brain is scrambled.”

A second typed: “#onlyconnect back after the #tourdefrance and #OlympicGames I get to shout at the TV weekly for 28 weeks.”

“It's lovely that Victoria's genuinely grateful that the teams actually bother to turn up,” commented another.

Someone else typed: “Lovely to have #OnlyConnect back on our screens although once again I am forced to lament that it’s not made up completely of missing vowels rounds at which I would surely be a champion.”

Ah, #OnlyConnect is back again,” penned a fifth viewer. “Brings back happy memories of inappropriately laughing at the jokes of @VictoriaCoren.”
