Jamie Carragher has warned Liverpool transfer target Anthony Gordon that he could be in for a “tasty” reception at Goodison Park if he swaps Newcastle for the Anfield giants. Liverpool are chasing the signature of the 23-year-old England winger less than two years after he joined the Magpies from Everton.

Gordon enjoyed a sensational campaign last time around as he bagged 11 goals and 10 assists in 35 Premier League appearances.

He also clinched a place in England’s squad for Euro 2024, although he only featured as a late substitute in the Three Lions’ final group game against Slovenia.

Carragher was asked by Sky Sports about the reception Gordon could expect from Liverpool fans given the fact he used to play for their arch-rivals Everton. And the former defender replied: “It wouldn’t be a problem. It might be tasty at Goodison Park, but he’d be fine.”

Carragher also explained: “Anthony Gordon would be a good signing for any team, he’s been a great signing for Newcastle.

“I cannot believe he didn’t get more minutes than he did at Euro 2024. I thought we were crying out for pace in the attack, and he adds that. I’ve known Anthony for a long time because he doesn’t live too far from me. I know a few of his relatives, so I’ve always been a huge fan of Anthony Gordon.

“If Newcastle are having problems with PSR (profit & sustainability rules), I would like Liverpool to be at the front of that [queue for Gordon] because he could be a real top player - he can go to another level.”

Gordon spent time in the Liverpool academy as a youngster before moving to the Toffees. He carved out a reputation as one of the best young players in the country while at Goodison Park and was handed his first-team debut as a 16-year-old in a Europa League clash with Apollon Limassol in December 2017.

The pacey attacker went on to make 78 appearances for Everton, before Newcastle agreed a £45million deal to take him to St James’ Park in January 2023.

He helped Newcastle secure a return to the Champions League in his first four months at the club and has contributed 13 goals and 11 assists in 64 appearances for the north east giants.

Gordon returned to action for the Magpies on Friday in a pre-season friendly against Girona and found the back of the net after just 15 minutes as his side won the clash 4-0.

And discussing the player’s future at the end of July, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe explained: “He's been committed. We've had no conversations over the summer where it has been fractious or negative. He's always been the Anthony Gordon who has given absolutely everything to Newcastle. He's such an important player for us, we didn't want to lose anybody.”
