Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou believes his squad are in a better place than they were a year ago after landing Dominic Solanke from Bournemouth at the weekend. The north London giants agreed to pay the Cherries an initial £55million plus a further £10m in add-ons to secure the services of the striker.

Tottenham led the Premier League table last autumn but eventually wavered as they went on to finish fifth and miss out on Champions League football.

And with Spurs set to travel to Leicester in their opening top-flight clash of the campaign next Monday, Postecoglou exclaimed: “We're a better prepared squad this year than last year.”

Postecoglou was extolled by many football fans last season for his insistence on playing exciting, attacking football.

And after sitting down for an interview with the Men in Blazers YouTube channel, the Australian said: “We’ll have grown a lot from last year of understanding about ourselves. When we were good we were exciting, I think we had everyone talking about us.

“When we had to grind, we found a way to get there. But there was obviously a space in there when we didn't cope well with disruptions, which I think is only natural because when things are going well it’s a lot easier to stay on board with something.

“We had some disruptions in terms of injuries, in terms of suspensions - some lack of discipline there for sure, which happens with young players. We didn't cope well with that but we learnt a lot through that.”

Tottenham made the move for Solanke after the 26-year-old had bagged 19 Premier League goals for Bournemouth throughout the last campaign.

And after putting pen-to-paper on a six-year contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the England international explained: “It means so much. To sign for a club like Tottenham is everything I’ve wanted really. It’s a magnificent club, a huge club with ambitions that match mine so I’m delighted to start and meet all the boys.

“What excites me most about the club is how ambitious it is. It has a great manager, great players and I feel like it suits my style of play as well, so I can’t wait to get started and do my stuff on the pitch.

“I think the club has got great depth throughout the squad. The attacking options are great and I think that’s what a top club needs.

“So I’m really looking forward to playing with those players, competing with them - and hopefully we can achieve great things.”
