Irvine Welsh, the iconic author of Trainspotting, has issued a stark caution for fans of his latest television sensation Crime, with the second series now gripping ITV viewers.

The show, which charts the travails of Detective Inspector Ray Lennox, took a more sinister turn as he delves into the assault of an ex-colleague. Complications arise when Lennox and his partner Detective Drummond uncover that things are not as transparent as they seem.

With ITV labelling the thriller as a deep dive into vengeance, identity, and societal justice, Welsh himself recently gave a heads-up to diehard fans on social media, writing: "Crime 2 Episode 2 is on soon at 9.00pm on @ITV. It is set to get much darker and funnier. Let's see if Lennox* gets the villain, gets laid or goes back the gear and gets his jotters. *No Jambos were harmed in the making of this show."

His followers lapped up the teaser, with reactions flooding his social media; one aficionado enthused: "The book was f***ing amazing."

Another excitedly posted: "Oooh. I thought it was a new, new one!", reports the Mirror.

Gordon Morris, featuring in the talked-about second episode, shared: "I'm in this one, Irvine! I love that for some unknown reason my name made it into lots of the early articles talking about the show."

Previously, Welsh prompted viewers with a reminder: "If you watched #Crime2 Ep 1 last night be sure to tune into Ep2 at 9.00pm on @ITV. Lots of big questions to be answered: who is the killer? Will Lennox catch them before he goes nutty? Will Albert Kidd's other goal be screened? Will Lennox get his leg over?"

ITV has teased an intriguing storyline involving a brutal attack that intersects with the attempted slaying of a notable figure at an upscale hotel, which has been suppressed by the authorities. They shared: "The attack is linked to a gruesome attempted murder of a high-ranking establishment figure at a posh hotel, which has been hushed up by the police.

"As Lennox investigates via Edinburgh's saunas, crack dens, and poshest hotels, he finds doors slammed in his face; there is an Establishment cover-up at play."

Intrigue deepens when Lennox's investigation gains stride after an assault against one of his own team, drawing connections to a disturbing occurrence from three decades past. ITV continued: "It's not until the killer targets one of Lennox's team that the pieces start to fall into place.

"Tracing the motivation back to an unsavoury incident 30 years ago, Lennox begins to realise that there is more to this case than meets the eye, and the killer he has been chasing may not be the driving force behind these murders after all."

Yet viewers should hold off on anticipating a conclusive resolution, as the narrative unfurls over six one-hour segments for the audience to delve into.
