The Umbrella Academy is nearing its end but how does Ben die in the Netflix drama?
Season four will mark the final goodbye for subscribers who have been gripped to the Netflix comic book adaptation since it debuted in 2019.
One of the characters to stand out among the Umbrellas is Ben Hargreeves (played by Justin H Min) as he died offscreen long before the first series began. Despite his demise, Ben still appears throughout the show, as a ghost, a spirit that’s possessed Klaus’ body, as well as a member of The Sparrow Academy in another universe.
But overall, Ben is hardly mentioned by his Hargreeves siblings, only cropping up in conversation when they ask Klaus if his ghost is there in certain situations.

The season four trailer, however, does tease that perhaps an explanation of Ben’s death could be given in the upcoming episodes. In the teaser, Five asks his siblings if they can “actually remember how Ben died” with none of them knowing what happened.
But it seems that the same answer has been drilled into all of them as Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman) begins before Luther finishes the sentence: “Ben died because we failed him as a team”.
This isn’t an oversight on the creators’ part though as comic book writer Gerard Way told IGN in 2019 that revealing how he was killed would spoil both his books and the show. It was also reported that as of at least season one that even showrunner Steve Blackman didn’t know how Ben’s story ended.

This doesn’t mean that his death won’t be explained in the fourth and final outing though as it has been teased in the trailer.
Ben is talked about heavily in the teaser with someone saying that he is the “key to understanding all the timelines”.
So with the trailer and the fact that this will be the last series, it does seem that fans will finally be getting the answers they’ve been looking for.
The Umbrella Academy season four premieres on Thursday, August 8, on Netflix.
