Alan Titchmarsh issues warning to ITV Love Your Weekend viewers over 'sexist' remark

James Murray labelled sexist by guest after 'lady petrol' comment

Alan Titchmarsh was forced to interrupt his Sunday morning programme, Love Your Weekend With Alan Titchmarsh, to issue a warning to viewers during the broadcast on August 4.

In a segment dedicated to wine on the ITV show, the  gardening guru and presenter engaged in conversation with his guests about British rose wines, including the Lyme Bay Winery Strawberry Wine. As he brandished a glass of the blush-hued beverage, he turned to actor James Murray, whom he endearingly referred to as Jim, and teased: "Wait now, wait for this, I remember now, it's come back to me. Jim has a term for wines like this - what do you call it?"

James appeared puzzled as he responded: "What did I call it? Lady petrol?" Alan confirmed, "Yeah," just before the wine connoisseur interjected, "That's a bit sexist!" A flustered James quickly retorted: "I didn't make it up but I just heard it and I passed it on to Alan."

At that point, Alan faced the camera directly and cut off the conversation, asserting to those watching: "The opinions expressed by my guests are not necessarily my opinion," shortly before James quipped that he had been "thrown under a bus".

Throughout the episode, James, who is wed to actress Sarah Parish, also spoke candidly about his charity efforts following the devastating loss of his infant daughter Ella-Jayne in 2009. Tragically, Ella-Jayne was born with a congenital heart defect and passed away at the tender age of just eight months, reports the Mirror.

After the loss, James and Sarah threw themselves into charity work at an orphanage in Cambodia, and subsequently founded the Murray Parish Trust in 2014. The trust dedicates its efforts to raising funds for paediatric emergency medicine across the south of England.

Reflecting on their journey, he shared: "We set that charity up as lots of people do who have been through trauma, as a way of giving back and as a therapy, as displacement if you like of where to put your grief. And it just grew."
