BBC Breakfast star shuts down Charlie Stayt moments after tragic health update

BBC Breakfast: Charlie Stayt hosts live from Normandy

The atmosphere in the BBC Breakfast studio turned icy this weekend as Rachel Burden shut down her co-host Charlie Stayt in an awkward moment.

The pair were discussing the recent announcement that rock band Aerosmith will retire from touring after nearly half a century – with singer Steven Tyler citing health issues as the reason behind the decision.

With their hit track I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing playing over a VT, Rachel revealed: “Aerosmith have retired from touring after almost 50 years.

“The group said their singer Steven Tyler’s voice couldn’t recover because of damaged vocal cords, and despite the best medical team, 76-year-old Tyler had made the difficult but necessary decision. 76! I had no idea he was that age.”

Once the recorded segment came to a close, Charlie turned to Rachel to quiz her: “Did I hear you singing along then, Rachel? Did I hear that? I think I heard that.”

But Rachel didn’t seem keen to engage with him, simply muttering: “Erm. Mumbling along. Yeah…” Charlie seemed to pick up on the awkwardness and turned to weather presenter Sarah Keith-Lucas, asking her: “Sarah, were you singing along?”

Sarah seemed in a much more chipper mood as she replied: “I mean, there might have been a bit of gentle swaying going on there!” Charlie cheered: “Oh look at that!” as Rachel quipped: “Get your lighter out!”

The group has released a statement for fans, which read: “It has been the honor of our lives to have our music become part of yours. In every club, on every massive tour and at moments grand and private you have given us a place in the soundtrack of your lives.

“We’ve always wanted to blow your mind when performing. As you know, Steven’s voice is an instrument like no other. He has spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury. We’ve seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side.

“Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible. We have made a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision – as a band of brothers – to retire from the touring stage.”

It added: “We are grateful beyond words for everyone who was pumped to get on the road with us one last time. Grateful to our expert crew, our incredible team and the thousands of talented people who’ve made our historic runs possible. A final thank you to you – the best fans on planet Earth. Play our music loud, now and always. Dream On. You’ve made our dreams come true.”

BBC Breakfast airs mornings from 6am on BBC One.
