BBC sparks uproar after 'refusing' to address Huw Edwards scandal despite public funding

Huw Edwards arrives at court in London

Krishnan Guru-Murthy claimed BBC bosses have "refused to do interviews". The publicly-funded broadcaster is facing questions over why they didn't sack Huw Edwards when they learned of his arrest in November.

Edwards was arrested after police searched the phone of a paedophile and found the pair had been exchanging WhatsApp messages. The Welsh-born broadcaster has pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children.

This is the latest scandal to hit the BBC following the recent saga surrounding Strictly Come Dancing.

The BBC is conducting an internal investigation after multiple allegations that participants on the broadcaster's megahit dance competition, Strictly, have been bullied and abused during the rehearsal process. The Strictly drama is the latest in a succession of duty-of-care scandals in television.

Taking to X on Thursday (Aug 1), the Channel 4 host hit out at the Beeb, writing: "BBC bosses are again refusing to do interviews. In fact, the Director General has refused interview requests on the BBC Annual Report, the serious allegations at Strictly and now the Huw Edwards scandal.

"It is utterly bizarre that this public organisation that we all have a stake in is refusing to face questions on its behaviour."

Social media users flocked to comment on the post and one person agreed: "Appalling."

A second wrote: "Someone has to front up and shoulder the accountability for this. The public has a right to know more."

A third quizzed: "Can they refuse? They are accountable to those of us who fund it surely?"

Another said: "It’s a public body, the least we should expect is accountability!"

While a fifth shared: "About time they stood down? Time for some fresh people in there."

"My TV licence fee pays for them. I demand transparency from these #BBC moguls. If they can't be, they must go," another stated.

Krishnan previously hit out at the Beeb and urged them to explain why they decided to keep Edwards' arrest a secret.

Police told the BBC not to share details of Huw Edwards' arrest for child abuse image offences in November 2023, a BBC source has since said.
