Outlander star spills ominous hint about Young Ian and Rachel romance after first kiss

Sam Heughan reveals the souvenir he'll take from Outlander set

Outlander star John Bell has opened up about where his character Young Ian’s relationship with the Quaker woman Rachel (played by Izzy Meikle-Small) could go in season seven, part two.

Ian and Rachel had been growing closer throughout the latest outing of the hit Starz drama, and they finally shared a kiss in last August’s midseason finale.

However, he tragically had to leave her behind to accompany Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) back to Scotland to bury the body of General Simon Fraser (Angus Macfadyen).

Although he received a slap in the face for boldly kissing Rachel, it was clear that she shares his feelings for him and could be eagerly waiting for his arrival back in America.

It won’t be easy being separated for that long, though, and Outlander star John has shared some potentially concerning insight into where Ian’s head is at by the end of the episode.

“It’s a really lovely scene, it feels very Outlandery,” he shared in an interview with Starz. “Ian’s first kiss with Rachel.

“I guess it’s that feeling a lot of us can relate to of, ‘If I don’t do it now then I’m never going to do it, so here goes!’

“He may have got slapped for it… It’s a bit of fun, I guess. The consequences of dating a Quaker are yet to be revealed, but let’s just say I don’t think it’s going to be as easy as one might hope.”

Rachel’s kiss with Ian will definitely leave her with a lot to ruminate on while he’s away, but it’s anyone’s guess how their reunion will go down in season seven, part two.

Plus, even if they do get together, John all but confirmed their relationship will have their fair share of challenges that could eventually end in disaster.

Sharing her own thoughts about the scene, his co-star Izzy said: “There’s obviously been a lot of tension building between them.

“And she really wants to kiss him, but she knows with every fibre of her body that this is wrong. It’s wrong in terms of her faith, it’s wrong in terms of the time.

“Like, you don’t be in a tent alone with a man if you’re unmarried and all of these different things, so everything in the scene feels very high stakes.

“But also, that’s partly what makes it so fun. She’s like, ‘Ooh, this shouldn’t be happening’. The scene was fun to film because there were so many layers being built.

“She’s very inexperienced with boys, so she wouldn’t even know how to kiss someone, she doesn’t know anything about that. So, she’s kind of overwhelmed with a lot of stuff in that scene and I think you see that with her being a bit like, ‘I don’t know how to deal with this!’”

Viewers will unfortunately have to wait a few more months to discover what's in store for the young hero.

Outlander season 7, part 2 premieres Friday, November 22 on Starz.
