BBC The Repair Shop expert admits 'irreplaceable' item is 'risky' to fix

The Repair Shop: Guests share sad story behind painting

The Repair Shop fans were introduced to Richard Postlethwaite and his daughter Nicky during a recent episode of the BBC show.

Entering the workshop, Jay Blades questioned what the pair had brought for goldsmith expert Richard Talman to fix during Wednesday (July 31) night repeated instalment.

Nicky explained: "I've got a ring that has my mum’s ashes in. Sadly, it got squashed when I was moving a table and got my hand stuck. Obviously, the resin with the ashes is there but it’s snapped just here."

Showing Jay and Richard the damage, they were able to see the intricate silver ring was bent out of shape and snapped to one side of the centre.

When asked about her late mum, the guest told Jay she was called Julie and died two years ago at the age of 62. Explaining she had lung cancer, Nicky added: “It was really hard because she was incredibly fit, active, into everything.”

Nicky described her mum, who was a nurse for 35, as the “glue” that held everything together. Giving more context on the ring, Nicky shared that her sister also has one, which isn’t damaged.

Unfortunately, the family had tried to get it repaired by the people who had made it, although they sent it back unable to help. Before Richard and Nicky had left the workshop, the expert said: “I do love a challenge, so I’ll do my very best for you.”

However, when they walked out, Richard quickly realised how important the item was he was tasked with fixing.

Turning to Jay, he said: “This is going to be, without a doubt, the most risky repair yet. Without a doubt.” Taking it to his bench to inspect further, Richard highlighted all of the issues with the special ring.

Mentioning the ashes inside, the expert told viewers he wasn’t going to be able to fix it the usual way because of the ashes, meaning he’d have to be more cautious.

Before revealing it to Nicky and her dad, the expert added: “Now that I’m on the final stages of this ring, I really do feel such a sense of relief.

“It is such a previous ring, such an irreplaceable ring, that means so much to Nicky and it wasn’t without risks, but I think Lady Luck has been on my side on this particular repair.”

When it came to revealing the ring to Nicky and her dad, they were blown away by what Richard had been able to accomplish.

In awe, Nicky said: “Wow, oh my goodness. That’s incredible, I cannot believe that. You’re very talented. Thank you!”

Putting it on her finger, the guest let out an audible gasp seeing it on her hand once again.

She added: “I really didn’t think I’d ever be able to wear it again, it’s been really hard obviously losing mum and the things that she’s missed out on since not being with us.

“So, to now have her going through those things almost with us again, it is really special so thank you.”

The Repair Shop is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
