BBC Breakfast guest halts interview as Sally Nugent issues apology

Breakfast: Sally apologises after guest has earpiece issues

BBC Breakfast was forced to halt the show on Tuesday after they suffered a sound blunder when chatting with Tom Pidcock. Speaking via video link from Paris, Tom struggled to hear hosts Sally Nugent and Ben Thompson.

Sally was forced to intervene and quickly apologised for the mishap as they tried to resolve the issue. Introducing the segment, Sally began: "Now few medals at the Olympics will be won in such dramatic fashion as the men's mountain biking medal won by Tom Pidcock."

Ben continued: "Yeah, the Team GB rider started the race as favorite and was leading the way until a puncture disrupted his plans.

"That put him nearly 40 seconds behind the leader with four laps to go before his way back and then with just 400 meters to go, this was the move that won him gold."

After playing a clip of Tom's victory, the presenters asked the Olympic champion how he was feeling now.

"Delighted to say Tom joins us now from Paris," Sally beamed as she turned to the cyclist: "Morning, Tom. Congratulations. Look at that fabulous gold medal. That race it must have felt a little bit like a dream sequence of times."

"You could say that. Yeah. It was a bit of a whirlwind, that's for sure," Tom replied.

As he struggled to hear, Tom went on: "Well, it didn't go as planned as you were just explaining but it was....some race...yeah."

"Ok maybe a nightmare, not a dream," Sally joked as Tom halted the interview.

"Sorry, this earpiece is echoing in my ear," he told the hosts as Sally quickly said: "Oh, I am so sorry, Tom. I tell you what, I am going to ask you a question while we try and sort that out for you in your ear.

"But I know that it was hugely challenging because the home crowd wasn't particularly kind were they?"

"No," Tom admitted. "There was a little bit of booing going on as I was coming through. Back from that puncture and then again at the finish line, it's not nice but I understand they wanted the French rider to win, but I don't think there is any place for that in the Olympics really."

BBC Breakfast airs daily at 6am on BBC One.
