Furious BBC viewers switch off Paris Olympics issuing same complaint despite legend's plea

Olympics: Peaty still smiling after narrowly missing out on gold

Viewers took to social media and issued a similar complaint after some claimed the BBC failed to air live coverage of certain sporting events at the Olympics Games 2024 - with people suggesting they have switched off altogether.

It comes as Brits who want to watch full coverage are having to pay to subscribe to Discovery+ - with the BBC only able to show two live events at any one time.

X user @CollingsBerry tweeted on Sunday (July 28): "Come on @BBCSport, where is the live coverage of the eventing cross-country? We’re in the lead after the first day and BBC is showing a rowing feature."

Social media users reacted to the post as @WattyRacing commented: "Only allowed to show two sports at any one time as the Olympic organisers sold the UK TV rights to Discovery + who put it behind a paywall. But by law, they have to sublet the rights to terrestrial television which is what the BBC are doing."

@warr10rz remarked: "BBC has limited coverage, to get dedicated live streams for an event you need to sign up to Discovery+. They currently have a deal for the Standard package at £3.99 p/mth you'd need to remember to cancel your subscription if you only want it for the next month for the Olympics."

Meanwhile, other viewers admitted they had switched off the Olympics following Friday's opening ceremony which wasn't to everyone's taste and sparked global backlash.

Former Olympic medallist Sharron Davies issued an urgent plea as she called for the public to continue to support Team GB.

She tweeted: "To all those thousands (just on my time line) boycotting the games because of the opening ceremony remember our British athletes had nothing to do with it, they have sacrificed a lot to wear the [Great Britain flag] & to proudly try their very hardest to make everyone at home proud of them…"

@terffeminator commented: "I will not be watching or supporting the games. Low viewing figures may be the only way of letting them know this is unacceptable."

@Sherpa51 remarked: "Sharron I watched up to Team GB sailed through, unfortunately, I felt that it was boring and turned off. I watched the cycling and swimming and diving. Great viewing."

@jigyovercame said: "The athletes have my support but I’m hoping Paris 2024 has the lowest TV ratings ever, hence not watching."

@kundilini1 added: "Tried watching yesterday afternoon and evening, but the BBC's coverage is abysmal. They keep flitting from one sport to another. Start watching basketball, go in the kitchen to make a cuppa, come back and they are showing rugby. Perhaps there are now too many sports for proper coverage."

Others agreed with Sharron and have continued to tune into the sports coverage, as @Windsor_Watcher shared: "Well said...it is so fair on all the athletes not just the UK ones. Let’s move on as the ceremony was not their fault..."

@stevieRentplus1 added: "Petty and childish to boycott the Games Sharron. 100% behind all the athletes, but cheering on Team GB. Four years of intense training just for a few minutes must seem surreal."

The opening ceremony for the 2024 Olympic Games sparked a furious backlash from Christian viewers around the world, as one scene which involved drag queens and other performers recreated Leonardo da Vinci’s 'The Last Supper' - with some branding the move a "mockery" of the Christian faith.

Meanwhile, Team GB have won their first gold medal in showjumping.
