Vivian Kong to go for gold in epee final

Fencing queen Vivian Kong will be the first Hong Kong, China medallist of the 2024 Paris Olympics after a dramatic semi-final victory in the women's epee in the early hours of Sunday. The world number one defeated Estonia's Nelli Differt 15-11 in a nail-biting semi-final that saw the lead change hands frequently. The first period started with a tight back and forth tussle that resulted in a two-all tie. That intensity continued into the second period, as the two players went neck to neck but Kong was able to move herself up on the scoreboard 8-7 by the end of that spell. Kong successfully widened the gap in the final round, adding seven points to pull herself into the gold medal bout. The gold or silver will be Hong Kong first ever medal in women's fencing. She'll face Hungary's Eszter Muhari or local favourite Auriane Mallo-Breton in the final at 3.30am, Hong Kong time.
