HK's Doo, Wong advance in table tennis mixed doubles

Hong Kong's table tennis pair of Doo Hoi-kem and Wong Chun-ting advanced to the last eight in the mixed doubles event, defeating their Hungarian opponents 4-1 in their opening match. The SAR duo jumped out to a 2-0 lead, before Dora Madarasz and Nandor Ecseki clawed a game back 11-4. The Hungarians lost the fourth game 11-6 as the SAR duo stormed their way to take the final game 11-8. "Our belief never wavered. We hope we can play every point well. And in the end, we managed to do that," Wong told reporters in the post-match interview. The pair will face Maria Xiao and Alvaro Robles from Spain in the quarter-finals on Sunday. Meanwhile, Hong Kong gymnast Stone Shek was unable to make it to the final round in vault, finishing 12th in the qualifying round with eight athletes making the cut. He miscued his first jump after landing on his feet and needed to use his hands to regain his balance. Shek, who was making his third Olympic appearance after London and Tokyo, ended up with a score of 14.099. Despite not advancing further, the gymnast, 32, said Paris was a very good experience which he found to be the most enjoyable and pressure free in his 20 odd years in the sport. "Because vault after all is a little bit like gambling. No matter how good you do during practice, when you can't make the move during the competition, you can't," Shek told reporters.
